Welcome to Atlanta! 2021 gave birth to the re-opening of America, leaving many of us screaming –we outside! This year it was a pleasure to be outside again for one of Atlanta’s premiere book lovers’ events, the Atlanta Kickback. The Intellectual Ink crew was there to capture it all.
The Atlanta Kickback was held on Saturday, July 17, 2021, from eleven to four pm EST at the Georgia International Convention Center. The event is hosted annually by the 556 Book Chicks Book Club, Monika Mitchell aka Book Chick Monika, Tiffany Britt, and the late Benita Litmon, and the event is free to the public.
Due to last year’s closure, the event combined the 2020 and 2021 roster of authors and boasted over 150 authors featuring genres from children’s books and YA to street lit and urban fiction to black romance and erotica. Some of the power-packed lineup included authors Shataya Simms, Monica Walters, Rae Lyse, A.S. Wilson, Genesis Woods, Navi Robins, Monica Walters, Avery Good, Wynta Tyme, Desiree, and yours truly, Untamed, just to name a few. Author Desiree’s line was author GOALS, y’all!
Filled with live hip hop and R&B music provided by one of Atlanta’s premier DJs and a live performance by Zo the Artist, the venue was ablaze with a street party-type atmosphere. Along with the surfeit of books for sale, various vendors had items ranging from jewelry to apparel to beauty care products and book-themed merchandise. Book lovers from all over the country settled into the 5th annual event enjoying the atmosphere and festivities.
Notable book bloggers, book clubs, and book lovers were in attendance. Among the attendees were Robert White of Robert Reading Room & Reviews, Kami’s Kurrent Reads, My Luv of Books, EyeCU Reading, and hundreds of avid readers vying to see their favorite authors and getting acquainted with new ones.
Authors got in on the fun, too, venturing from table to table to take pictures and purchases their fellow authors’ books. Of course, for them and some avid readers, the fun began the night before at the Luau-themed party at the AC Hotel. It is, as they say, what happens at the Luau stays at the Luau!
The event ended with several warm thoughts of appreciation to the hosts, 556 Book Chicks. The host showcased their gratitude to the authors with custom-made Atlanta Kickback t-shirts and bookmarks, designed by Elle Welch of Ellegant Swag Boutique and an official welcome letter from the Governor of Georgia. The Atlanta Kickback was a stellar gathering for the welcomed re-emergence of in-person literary events.
In 2016, the annual 556 Book Chicks Atlanta Kickback Book Fest was created by Tiffany Britt, Monika Mitchell, and the late Benita Litmon to host a space for authors all over the United States to showcase their work and gain new readers. It is held in Atlanta, Ga. Learn more by visiting www.atlantakickback.com.
