URBAN LITERARY INFLUENCER
First and foremost, I’d like to count this as one of my many blessings. Small miracles happen each and every day. You just have to pay attention, be open to receiving them. Being allowed to participate in what has easily become one of the “monthly must-read” magazines in the literary industry is one of those small miracles. If by chance this is your first time grabbing a copy of this publication, please don’t let it be your last. I have every issue in my library and so should you. Okay now, that being said, let me get on to these questions. I swear I feel so damn V.I.P. right about now. (smile)
Before we get to the great literary events that you plan, give us a brief history lesson on exactly who Ms. Michel Moore is.
Well, I come from humble beginnings. No, no, I’m just joking. Actually, I was born and raised in Detroit, home of the legendary Motown. Matter of fact, the Motown Museum is not too far from my childhood dwelling as well as Aretha Franklin’s father’s church. So, I was surrounded by a rich African American landscape of history.
My father died two days after my fifth birthday, leaving my mother, my older brother Dwayne, my paternal grandmother, and me. If you ask them, I was a lil bit crazy from birth, so to speak. Or if we’re being politically correct, let’s label me as being eccentric before my time. I always marched to the beat of a much different drum. (smile)
Different huh? They say most intelligent folk are.
Okay, intelligent. Yeah, I’ll take that. Although I grew up in what most would consider “the hood,” my life was pretty much charmed. Well, what I felt was charmed. There were no big struggles. I went to Catholic school most of my learning days. I didn’t have many, no let me strike that, any friends in my neighborhood. The three that I did have moved away when I was about 10, maybe 11. After that, I pretty much was on my own. I would often retreat to my room and disappear into books. My love for reading developed early on. Just like each wide-eyed youngin that worshiped a great story, those Scholastic Books Boxes would be on deck every few months. I had my own individual box. When I got the list, I’d check almost everything. And my mother never once held me up on the money. Matter of fact, shout out to my mother, Ella Fletcher, for always supporting my dreams no matter how big or small. Dang, sorry for begging for that new piano, which she purchased when I swore to God, the Easter Bunny, and on Santa Claus’ life that I wanted to take lessons and become a concert pianist. Yeah, damn decades later, Baldwin Piano still sitting in her living room.

Kapri James wasn’t born into the struggle of the game, but she craves it. Despite pleas from her mother, the upper-middle-class teen is addicted to “slumming” and living the fast life. Everything about the black-hearted mentality of Detroit draws her in with ease. Drug dealing, carjackings, home invasions, snatch and grabs, and mayhem in general have to be on a man’s resume to catch her eye.
Hardcore criminal Nolan White, known citywide as a shooter, fits that description to a tee, and Kapri has to have him. She is a hood Bonnie to his gangster Clyde, and the streets often run red when the couple is involved. Theirs is a union inked in cold blood.
