We discovered The Black Reserve Bookstore last month while researching and highlighting independently owned black bookstores around the country. We believe that Black bookstores are a vital part of the African American community because they provide a space for black authors and readers to come together and celebrate our culture. Mr. Shaykh Anwar A M. Muhammad's establishment is the epitome of this. We had the distinct honor of interviewing him in this month's issue. Here's a sneak peek of that conversation.
Tell us about the origin of The Black Reserve Bookstore.
Our mission was to give significant access to culture and history that goes way beyond what we’ve typically learned. With this point in mind, we treated each book as a work of adoration. Our books are broadly examined, attentively composed, and delightfully planned.
What type of books does your store specialize in?
The Black Reserve Bookstore specializes in Black literature and that is meant in totality. As in any and everything that is or was written by Black authors.
What's your favorite section of the store?
Being a lover of history, I'd definitely say the classic and historical section. I believe that we cannot know where we are going until we know where we came from.
