Eugene Jackson became Jay Jaxon on August 30, 1941, in Queens, New York. The youngest of four, born to Ethel Rena-Jackson and Sidney Jackson. His mother, Ethel Rena-Jackson, was the housekeeper, and his father was a truck driver.
Jean-Louis Scherrer, a Black American designer who took the reins of the prestigious French fashion house Jean-Louis Scherrer in the late 1960s and early 1970s, designing for Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, and Dior for a time, has been relegated to a discreet corner in the history of fashion. Mr. Jaxon died of complications of prostate cancer on July 19, 2006. He was 64.
